This book was originally written for the Portland Marathon Clinic, which we have been fortunate to have conducted since 1984. This is the original version of the book produced in 1986. We have since rewritten it and included extended training schedules, training pulse rate information and additional sections on shoes and other facets of the marathon. We have also improved many of the original chapters.
The marathon clinic has provided over 1,500 runners with their first marathon experience, something nobody ever forgets. This book has been the basis of their training.
The clinic, and the Portland Marathon, are among the most successful in the United States.
